The Thermals are awesome. Portland has also given us Ape Shape, White Rainbow, Valet, White Fang, and others. Rob Walmart has a great neo-pop art kind of name.

My favorite bands can kick your favorite bands' asses.
The horizon is right and motionless like the EKG of a dying woman.
The Pick - Pockets.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. - Edgar Allan Poe
Bunch together a group of people deliberately chosen for strong religious feelings, and you have a practical guarantee of dark morbidities expressed in crime, perversion, and insanity. - H.P. Lovecraft
Don't know any of those others but I like some of the names. I'll have to check out the music.
As for The Thermals, I cannot wait for their next album due out in 2009. The Body, The Blood, The Machine will be a tough act to follow, but it should be interesting for sure.
I like the name "Bring Me The Horizon"
... From the keyboard of Kevin
"A gunslinger knows pride - that invisible bone that keeps the neck stiff."
"Officer Benzyck! It's good to see you and there's some jam right there on your collar, praise God!"- Rev. Earl Harrigan
My favorite band name ever is ACDC. Not my favorite band, but one of the coolest names ever. Its a simple name, but dangerous and mean at the same time.

I also like the name "Annotations Of An Autopsy" kinda cool

Ape Shape is a band of artists, including some friends of my family. White Rainbow (aka Adam Forkner) and Valet (aka Honey Owens, Forkner's partner) do their own takes on ambient music and are two of my favorite musicians (Adam has done music with The Microphones and Dirty Projectors and was a founder of the all too awesome space rock band Yume Bitsu). White Fang is straight up rock.

Sounds cool. Thanks for the info Fruno. I shall check them out.
I think We Are Scientists is my favorite band name now. I also think Spoon(my actual favorite band) has a good name.
I think there should be a band called The Noseless Crusade.
Both are good, though I've only heard Spoon. Don't know too much of their stuff yet, but I liked what I heard.
Interesting.I think there should be a band called The Noseless Crusade.
I like the Black Keys both as band and a name. From what I understand the name came from some kind of inside joke between the two guys in the band who have been friends since childhood about a guy their parents knew, but what is also cool about it is that they are blues-based band and one can play minor pentatonic scale melodies on a piano using the black keys.
What Spoon did you hear?
Gimme Fiction and Ga Ga Ga
Those were the first two I got. I like 'em a lot, but I have to say my favorite is Girls Can Tell.
I can't believe I forgot to mention Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
Spoon are named after a song by Can. It's on Tago Mago I think. Much like how Negativland and their label Seeland are named after songs by German rockers (and personal faves) Neu!.

That's interesting. I'll check Can out.
Also, Echo and the Bunnymen is a great frakking name.
The song is on their album Ege Bamyasi. Can are a great band, one of my favorites. But you have to stop when Damo left the band. Anything with just Holger sucks.

Can, as I am sure you know, is a HUGE influence on Radiohead (particularly Thom).
And Radiohead, as I'm sure you're aware, is really fucking good.
Also, they have a good name.
a ex and I bought a bed once, on the box it came in this was printed:
"Allison SIDERAIL WITH SUPPORT"
I thought that would be a awesome concert poster. (Allison Siderail being the band, of course)
at least I think it was Melissa
(I was wrong)
Some are born to sweet delight,
some are born to the endless night.
Sometimes it's not the band name. Sometimes it's just the band that makes the name great. I mean, look at some of my favorite bands of all time:
Pearl Jam (stupid name great band)
The Cream (stupid name great band)
The Who (catchy name but kinda silly, great band)
The Presidents of the United States of America (catchy name, a little silly, great band)

edited my post above, since I remembered the correct name
Some are born to sweet delight,
some are born to the endless night.
I liked it better the first time Chap. Melissa is my wife's name.
Still, if there were a band named from something like that it would make for a good story when they're asked where their name comes from.
