I don't believe it's part of a series.

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (abbreviated WWZ) is a novel by Max Brooks which chronicles a theoretical zombie apocalypse, specifically the titular "Zombie World War", as a series of after-the-fact oral history interviews with prominent survivors.

Though a follow-up to his humorously deadpan previous book, The Zombie Survival Guide, WWZ is more serious in tone, and strives to be both factually and psychologically convincing. The book was released on September 12, 2006. A movie based on it is in development.

I definitely have to check this out somewhere down the line

Reading House of Sand and Fog - i like the way its building up momentum. And no matter how much I try to understand his position, i don't particularly like the Behrani character and have little sympathy for his situation, especially when you do some digging into the reasons for the government overthrow in Iran.

Who else has read this?

I love The Long Walk. It's second only to IT.

It is a great book so far... I'm really starting to think King could be a psychologist... and I'll second what was said earlier... Rage is great, It was the first time I've said "wtf! you can't do that to the main character!"... pick it up!

I read it when it first came out. It's an okay read, especially if you like the "end-of-life-as-we-know-it" books. There's one scene in there concerning a surfer that sticks in my memory, too.

Still reading Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town.

It's slow going with how busy we've been but it's different. This guy has a mountain for a father, a washing machine for a mother, and his brothers are an island, a corpse, three nesting dolls and I think there might be one more....can't remember.
His neighbor reveals to him her bat-like wings.

I'm curious to see where it goes.

Anyway, it's interesting. Has a "Sci-Fi Essential Book" stamp on the cover.

Plus as always I have a couple math/physics books I'm plowing through (work related). I'm happy to say I'm one of those that always has 3-4 books going at the same time.
After I finish 'His Dark Materials' I'll finally start 'Back House' (I think)

i fucking love christopher moore. i thought lamb was one of the funniest books i've ever read in my life. ever. when joshua (jesus' hebrew name) drinks coffee for the first time and gets a total caffeine buzz and goes through the plaza healing everybody. "got you, got you, got you. ooops, missed you. got you, got you, got you, didn't get you." and biff runs behind him saying "stop, stop, you can't do that people will notice people will see" or something like that.

i can't think of a single christopher moore book that i haven't liked but lamb tops the list for me. let me know what you think of bloodsucking fiends. :)

Are they human? What rights do they deserve? It was terribly interesting at the time - we talked about the concept of the Overman as well. Wow. That and FANATIC! I think are the only 2 I don't own. These books are the definition of well loved, too. They've spent almost as much time on trains and Greyhound busses as Rollins himself. I just bought a copy of Jack Ketchums Flame Finder.
I'm only about 30 pages in , so I'll be back to let you
know what I think of it. I am in a strange mood about
the opposite sex @ home still, and the story may be
feeding a particular fantasy of mine just lately

I love Kethum's books and I've never heard of that one.

Thats because the book is called Old Flames, the ficticious business in the story is Flame Finders:doh:

On the Beach.

I'm excited to read it because Matt always talked about how good it is. Anyone else read it? I'd like to get more than one opinion about it.

My only real gripe so far is that Dwight always says things "equably". If you have to use adverbs, at least mix it up a bit. ><

Slash - Slash and Anthony Bozza.

This autobiography is a great read even if you not a fan of Guns N Roses. I've been a lifelong fan of Slash and GNR and thought I knew a lot about them but couldn't believe some of the stories in this book. Sex,drugs and Rock N Roll and everything in between. When you read this you are amazed that Slash is still alive today and even he cant get over it sometimes. I'd recommend this to anyone.

The Road - Cormac McCarthy.

I have to say this is the bleakest book I think I've ever read. A while back a lot of people on this site highly recommended his books to read and when someone mentioned The Road was an apocalyptic novel in the vein of The Stand I had to get it. The Road makes The Stand seem like a fallout in a play yard. Once I started I couldn't put it down. Also see why some people said his writing style is hard to get into but after about 20 pages or so in I was hooked. Absolutely brilliant, The Road is one of the best books I've read in a long long time.

The Road was so completely different from what I was expecting. The harshness of the landscape and the utter hopelessness of the situation they were in made it very grim reading. I finished the book last night and this morning went up to Easons to look for some more of his books and got No Country For Old Men. Intended to buy a couple of his books but that's all the had in stock apart from The Road. Really looking forward to begin reading it later on this evening. Well, I don't believe all of his stories are, but a great deal of his writing is pretty violent. None of that bothers me. It's just one part of a story to me. A Wolf At The Table: A Memoir Of My Father, by Augusten Burroughs.

For about two and a half pages.

The Hem of my mother's skirt. A wicker lantern that hangs from the ceiling, painting the walls with sliding, breathing shadows. A wooden spoon and the hollow knock as it strikes the interior of a simmering pot. My high chair's cool metal tray and the backs of my legs stuck to the seat. My mother twisting the telephone cord around her fingers, my mouth on the cord, the deeply satisfying sensation of biting the tight, springy loops.

it depends whether or not they do something different with it. if it's just a straight cover then what's the point?

Mostly :)

I don't think theres anything wrong with translating a film into a movie, it's not like they're taking credit for it.

Well, when directors adapt a book into a movie, they don't do straight covers, there are multiple differences between the book and the movie...isn't that kind of the same thing?

Darkthoughts
06-24-2008, 10:04 AM
Oh its not that, its more that they usually ruin the book with their crappy translations.

I don't agree with this line of thinking. Exactly how does a bad film ruin a book? Nothing that occurs in a movie can alter what is written in that novel. Whether or not you liked the directors interpretation is another thing.

Well, an example would be the Harry Potter films - which on the whole I thought were crap.
I loved Cuaron's directing in POA, but that was it. Rubbish casting, rubbish acting...and now every time I read HP I see bloody Dan Radcliffe!
Thats how it affects the novel ;)

So, if a DT movie does come out, and it's uber crap, it's going to make you change your opinion on the series as a whole?

I think everybody by now knows how I feel about the LotR movies. Just wait until there are DT movies and he forum is full of people who think they know everything about DT bc they saw a movie but never read the books and then you will know what I mean. I dealt with it with LotR plenty.

It won't make me dislike the books - I still love the HP books, I just have to concentrate hard to remember how I saw Harry et al before I'd seen the films. But I very possibly won't watch the DT movie in the first place, because it would drive me mad if it was incorrect and deviated from the books in any way (which of course it will ).

Jayson - I felt the same with LotR :shoot:

I'm not a big movie goer anymore, so its unlikely I'd get to see it. I don't drive and the nearest cinema is miles away. Plus, if Rob and I ever get a babysitter we'd rather go out for a meal/drink...y'know, somewhere we can talk to each other outside of parent mode :D

If film makers didn't get their ideas from books then we wouldn't have any movies.. are you actually suggesting that filmmakers should come up with their own, original ideas?? *gasp*

People for whom the movie adaptations ruin the original BOOKS are like fundamentalists for whom scientific notions threaten their worldview even though the former appears to be more accurate--in other words, they didn't have much faith to begin with.

Just my two cents.

 But I'm not saying the book is ruined - but it can mar it visually (ie, my HP example).
If I love a book I have total faith in it - its the film makers I don't have faith in...if it ain't broke, don't fix it! :P

i don't really mind having a visual of a character for me well that's if i see the movie first and then read the book. but when i read it and have my own visual i just usually go 'hmm... that's not what i thought he looked like.' or 'hmm.. they did a pretty good casting job, thats JUST how i thought he looked.'

Wasn't accusing you of such--just speaking in general, based on the conversation being held.... ;)

Anyway, USUALLY the movie version is worse, and even if it isn't (even if it's BETTER, which is exceedingly rare), it is still limiting. But I think part of the reason it's usually worse is that movies are usually thought of as a business and a whole bunch of people work on it--rather than being thought of as an art form, the vision of one person, as a novel is.

I think after this Palahniuk binge, I'm definitely taking a break. Five of his books within a week and a half or so is a bit too much pessimism. I love the writing and the stories are great, too, but they're such bummers. It's really bringin' me down.
I need a little hope and optimism.
