As a part-time writer I was hoping for a lot more from King in a book about writing. Some of it was good, some of it not so much.

Curious, which parts were, "not so much."
I'd have to look at the book itself again to remember since I haven't picked it up since I first read it, but I will try to do that later and get back to you. I just remember not being as into the book as I was hoping to be given the subject matter and the author.
You know how the book was kind of parsed half biography and then half writing tidbits? I'd really like to hear what you think about that method and where it strengthened or weakened King's points.
If you don't feel like it or aren't able, then don't worry about it.

I gave it a 4. I liked the autobiographical parts, and I thought there was some good advice in there as well.

I gave it a 5 because I really did love it. I had to read it for a creative writing class a few years ago and I've read it twice since then. I think it is wonderful.

I gave it a 5. I loved the autobiographical parts, and I found alot of the pointers and information in the second part to be useful.
In my opinion, the finest book about the art of writing out there, far superior to strunk n whites elements of style
Every time I cant figure out if a metaphor in one of my poems is good or just bizzare n stupid I think of what sai king says about "my angry lesbian breasts" that yes lesbians have breasts and lesbians may be angry but breasts themselves are never angry

I chose the 'it's good' option.
Actually, this is the one book by King that I didn't complete. Not because I disliked it, but merely because there was a section where he provides a creative writing exercise. I wanted to be true to the book and complete the exercise first before continuing, but I never got round to it.
It's still an exercise I wouldn't mind undertaking though. There is a certain enjoyment in writing something according to another's synopsis.
I was going to do the exercise, too, but by the time I read it they were no longer accepting them at King's office.

I loved On Writing, for many reasons. There is some great advice in there for all levels of writers, from beginners to published authors. Also, I really liked the semi-autobiographical feel to it. I personally wouldnt have accepted a bare bones, 'here is how you write a story' book from King, since he's spoken ad nauseam on the fact that good fiction shouldn't be forced or planned out.

Yeah, I think they'd stopped when I read (part of) the book too. At the time I was unaware though, I was just going to do it as an exercise.
