Hearts are tough, she said, most times hearts don't break, and I'm sure that's right . . . but what about then? What about who we were then? What about hearts in Atlantis?
i'm comparing like with like. When young, viewed at the same distance as now with the naked eye.

"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King

pffffftt!
I thought I had made the tree/sea connection...

I keep thinking a timey-wimey thing.
Maybe more thoughts later.
All that's left of what we were is what we have become.
Ok here are some additional clues...
helpful?

in any way related to storing/processing information?
Ask not what bears can do for you, but what you can do for bears. (razz)
When one is in agreement with bears one is always correct. (mae)
bears are back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"One day you're going to figure out that everything they taught you was a lie."
: nods :
I was thinking chips too

No, in the unlikely case it is right, we'll share the goose. I totally forgot about silicon, and the very word "chip" slipped bears' mind

Ah so should I award this to bears who made a generalization or to Br!an who is pretty close.???
I award you each a goose (no need to share).

The actual answer was intended to be a CPU, but Silicon chip is acceptable.
Here is the riddle again with the explanations:
I came from the sea,
Br!an was right, A large part of the worlds silicon is formed in the earths crust and is deposited as sand on our beaches. Although the silicon used in chips is man made, this was an acceptable link to the word (IMHO)
Although my predecessors came from the trees.
Interesting guess on Paper from Br!an. in my mind I was thinking the predecessor to a CPU was a 'counting machine' the earliest form of which would be an abacus which were made of wood.
When I was young, I was huge,
The earliest CPU's were entire Computers that filled rooms. And as a 'double' used Glass valve tubes which were made of sand! (I came from the sea...)
As I gained strength, I lost weight,
Replace 'strength' with 'power' and 'lost weight' with 'reduced size' and it makes sense
Now I am 1000's of times stronger, but you can barely see me.
Again, replacing 'stronger' with 'powerful' gives the answer and modern cpu chips are now so small you need a microscope to see them
What am I?
I'm a CPU!

And the other clues (for completeness) in case it wasn't obvious
Cort could not have solved this riddle
I doubt if Cort had ever seen or heard of Computers
Susannah may have solved it, but wouldn't believe it.
Susannah came from the 60's and would not have imagined the strides made in Computer technology
Jake probably could have solved it
Jake came from the 70's and would have witnessed the start of circuit miniaturization
Eddie has the best chance of knowing the answer
Eddie came from the 80's and would have been familiar with modern computer technology and the increase in power and reduction in size.
Oh and the answer was mentioned recently in a completely unrelated thread by another member - just a coincidence!!
Citizen of Lud mentioned in the Occupation thread that he worked for a company that made tools to create microprocessors!
An additional clue that no-one would have noticed... The title was "Blaine's a pain' - Blaine is of course one big bank of CPU's
