now, why couldn't he bracket these with, respectively, Nicholson and Stewart?..

"Woo ha." vs. "I'm an excellent driver." My God how can I chose!
I thought the excellent driver was Dustin Hoffman?

Both great actors and good men, I just still think that it's rather pitiful most of America believes that these two are the all-time pinnacle of motion picture craft.
After much thought, I went with Pacino ... but only by the slightest of margins.
I decided on DeNiro... before I voted I thought of his performance in Cape Fear
Buddy, you think you look strong? You’re wearing a cape.
Wow, I didn't think that this poll would be this lopsided ....
This is a common debate among me and my friends. I will have to get back to you on this one.

Okay, so I really sat down and broke this down. This films in bold are among my personal favorites:
Pacino
Donnie Brasco
Godfather 1-3
Dog Day Afternoon
Heat
Glengarry Glen Ross
Scent of a Woman
Carlito’s Way
Scarface
…And Justice for All
Serpico
DeNiro
Godfather 2
Goodfellas
Casino
Jackie Brown
Heat
A Bronx Tale
This Boy’s Life
Cape Fear
The Untouchables
King of Comedy
Deer Hunter
Raging Bull
Taxi Driver
Mean Streets
Bang the Drum Slowly
Analyze This
Meet the Parents
As you can see, Pacino and DeNiro have made some of my favorite films. As an Italian-American, I've literally grown up watching the films of these two actors. There is not a family gathering that passes where a DeNiro or Pacino films is not mentioned.
Final Verdict
As much as I love Pacino, I have to cast my vote with DeNiro. My reasoning behind this is that I feel DeNiro has shown a little more range over the years. Playing a character like Rupert Pupkin in King of Comedy proves this. Also, DeNiro's transition into comedy (Meet the Parents and Analyse This) was pretty seamless, even though he was playing off of his previous gangster films personas. I will admit that I'm a little worried with some of DeNiro's recent films choices. It seems like he will be in anything these days. I feel his career hit an all time low in the film Little Fockers where Ben Stiller injects a large needle into DeNiro's enormously large penis that is bulging through his pants. As a fan of cinema, I died a little.
