Why did the sisters heal the people?
Does blood taste better if the owner is healthy?
Why did the sisters heal the people?

Roland would have understood.
i think the bugs healed them because
1. if they see/smell blood they go into a frenzy
2. it gave them an excuse to keep them there
remember that they were posing as doctors the whole time.
if somehow someone saw someone (try saying that ten times fast) that went in to get a large gash in their leg healed, and ten days later it looks no different, it would kind of blow their cover.
3. it made the host last a bit longer.
4. it kept the HOSTS thinking that they were being helped
So, would I be right to surmise it's all guesswork? I was happy to see this thread started by Nikolett, because I had suspected it was only me who didn't understand that part, and that because I was (ashamed to say so, but it's true) too bored by the story (except the first few pages) to pay too much attention.
Ask not what bears can do for you, but what you can do for bears. (razz)
When one is in agreement with bears one is always correct. (mae)
bears are back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why the bug healed them that's another good question, too. (I feel they were slaves of the sisters, somehow.) Why the sisters made them heal the people... that's the thing that doesn't let me go.
I have too guesses,
- fresh, healthy blood tastes much better
- sick blood can steal their energy, too or make them sick
It seems quite logical. If blood is the only thing they eat it should be very good quality.
Roland would have understood.
Oh yes Letti, the healthier the blood ...the better it tastes, but were not too picky down at the infirmary.....I mean the sisters in the story thought so.
The answer is within
all matter is energy, all energy is GOD
I think it's farming essentially. Taking the sick into their tent gives them easy access to victims. I think it's right that healthy blood tastes better, or can provide them with better sustenance, but I think a healthy person will supply more blood too. Vampires feed off the living remember. The person dies of blood loss, they don't kill them then feed. If they feed from the sick, they'll die quicker and there will be less blood. With healthier people, the heart will pump longer supplying more blood.
Ok, that's disturbing.... where did my mind just go?... :{
Aha... it's like keeping chickens and ducks... you feed them you give them home you try to heal them if they get weak and you protect them from the fox... to eat them at the end.
Roland would have understood.
Yes indeed.
When they captured the wagon train with John (brother of James), they ended up with what, 20+ people in the infirmary.
By the time Roland got there (probably not all that long - James' corpse was bloated but still there with a dog just starting to worry at it), they had already healed and consumed all but 2, and they consumed those 2 in the space of what, 2 or 3 nights!
Yes, they were HUNGRY bitches!
Did anyone else realize/believe that the Little Doctors were a part of the Little Sisters themselves. My thinking: when Roland and Jenna are laying down at sunrise he hears a shrill scream and awakes to find Jenna gone, her clothes fallen (in place of a body) and a mass of the Little Doctors forming a "comma" (Jenna's personal sigul- almost). So, I was led to believe that Jenna herself was a personified being composed by the Little Doctors (hence her differently colored Dark Bells on whe wimple) and therefore she would heal paitents so her Sisters could feast. She was notedly "special" and could "control" the Doctors because she and they were one in the same. She and Roland escaped while part of her "self" consumed Coquina for the escape.
I think they were all made of the Little Doctors to some extent. Roland had a sense of 'variousness' on looking at them. Something he didn't get from Jenna, who seemed almost just a human girl. (He turned out to be wrong, mind you.)
I wonder if this the same for all type 1 vampires or if the Little Sisters are a species to themselves. I would go for the latter although (later books spoilers)Spoiler:
I believe that they are like group mentality bedbugs. They want to fatten the prey and feed ,feed, feed,=it is the whole vampiric, blood sucking insect connection. They heal to deceive. It is in the complacent sense of "healing" that victims defenses are down. Just as we believe that we are made of cells the Little Sisters are composites of the little doctors-their true form-
anestesising blood sucking parasites. They "numb" and distract, and then devour. Probably something that evolved in "Mr. Barlow's" crypt, bedbugs of vampires.
"It's his eyes, Roland thought. They were wide and terrible, the eyes of a dragon in human form" - Roland seeing the Crimson King for the first time.
"When the King comes and the Tower falls, sai, all such pretty things as yours will be broken. Then there will be darkness and nothing but the howl of Discordia and the cries of the can toi" - From Song of Susannah
The 'hospital' was essentialy a larder. If you were storing food, would you like to keep it fresh (alive) or let it rot (die)?
For me they seemed to be way too greedy to be able to store anything. I think they waited to get blood with better taste. They developed the quality of it. And when you enjoy killing it's much better to take the life of the one who would like to keep it a lot.
A little bit OFF:
There is a movie called Leon. There is a dialog in it I like:
killer: Do you love your life sweetie?
little girl: I do.
killer: Good. I don't enjoy killing people who don't love their life.
Roland would have understood.
All good points, an overall intriguing installation by SK! Just got done reading it.
