Movies from the 20s are so different from movies made in the 50s. I think it'd be unfair to put them all against each other. That'd be like putting Nosferatu up against Vertigo. Film making changed vastly over those years.

And here is the overall 1 through 256 ranked list for the 2000s according to our membership:
Strong list. I'm still not sure how Gangster No. 1 doesn't at least get one vote.

I don't see how this is inherently a problem though? I mean, isn't this what all of us film lovers do anytime we say a Hitchcock mystery film is better than than xyz thriller of the 2000's? Can I not say Godfather is the greatest film of all time even though it was out in the 70's?
Ultimately I'm just trying to protect the fun factor of the tournaments. I would hate for Mae to go through all this work only for those decades to have like 9 voters in each thread.
Hope everyone's having a great holiday season, but things are about to get interesting here again as we launch the third part of our Great Movie Tournament, covering the decade of the 1980s! The actual nominations thread should be going up in early January, I want to get a good head start so that we may wrap up the nominations and then have some time before actual voting begins, since some of you voiced a preference to try and see some of the nominations you might have been unfamiliar with. The nomination process will also be slightly amended this time around to hopefully make it last a little longer. The waiting period for nominations will be increased from three to five. That means five other members will need to make a nomination before you can make another one. Seconds increase from one to two, so two members will need to second a nomination before you can second another one. The number of nominations to be seconded remains the same: 256. Does that sound fair to everyone?
Can't wait! The 80s is one of my favorite decades of film

Sounds good to me, I like the revisions.
Let's roll!
Hope you lovely people have been making your '80s lists because the nominations will begin tomorrow afternoon!

Yes, hopefully the nomination process can go on for a couple of weeks so that everyone who wants to has a chance to get in at least a few noms. And then once all the nominations are locked in, at least a week or two for everyone to try and watch some of the films they might be unfamiliar with. Voting should begin late January or early February (aiming for Monday, January 27, since the 1990s tournament started on January 28).
I hope so! I doubt I'll be able to get on this weekend at all, so hopefully I can get some of my favorites in next week. I got my list ready to go
Only the gentle are ever really strong.
I have 38 so I am good for know. Although I know I will mess up on the nomination and seconding process so I hope people will have mercy on me .

Don't worry about it, if you should nominate or second out of turn we can always count that later. But just to go over the general rules for everyone and anyone who may be new to this, if you're making your first nomination, then just make it. If you want to nominate another movie, you need to count how many other people have made a valid nomination. This time, if there have been five other nominations made after yours, then you can make another. You always need to wait until at least five other people nominated something before you can nominate again. You can also second anything at any time, but to second another movie again, you'll need to make sure two other members seconded something else before you do. You always need to count and see that there were at least two seconds made between yours.
So..... let’s just crown Raiders now? Or no?

Raiders is great. But that year we also had Das Boot, so...
Oh, Das Boat. I may have forgot to put that on my list. Great film.

Das a no Mae. Lol. We do have Empire but I’m betting Raiders will take too prize. My top 10 from the decade are: Top Gun, Goonies, Raiders, Temple of Doom, Terminator, Back to Future, Ghostbusters, Return of the Jedi, Beverly Hills cop, Die Hard and with many that are very close. It’s the decade that got me introduced to movies but I was so young only so many stuck. Our final top 25 I’m going to watch the ones I have not seen. There is probably a few!

As usual, I'll be nominating mostly comedies. There were some pretty good ones in the 80's.
Spaceballs, Airplane, National Lampoon's Vacation and Christmas Vacation, UHF, The Naked Gun, Coming to America and pretty much the entire Police Academy Series.
Hearts are tough, she said, most times hearts don't break, and I'm sure that's right . . . but what about then? What about who we were then? What about hearts in Atlantis?
