HELP ME FIND
Insomnia #459
ANY S/L #459
Neg rep (publicly, not via anonymous method) for hating such great movies, and having the hubris and naiveté to think any film before you; your most important self was of no value.
Spoiler:
My homework is complete! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...54&single=true
Hopefully someone will find this interesting because it was quite the task.
It's hardly comprehensive, but I'd say it's fairly in-depth. I essentially kept it to lead actors. There are a few character actors that I like that I saw popping up in a lot of films, so I included them. Actors like Philip Baker Hall, Dean Norris and Xander Berkley had quite a few films on the list. Although it was time consuming, it was quite an interesting exercise for me. I discovered a bunch of actors in films that I watched years ago before a even knew who certain actors were, so it was very educational in many ways.
Anyway, in regards to lead actor we have a tie. Tom Hanks and Robert DeNiro tied with 9 films in our tournament. DeNiro - Goodfellas, A Bronx Tale, Heat, Casino, Cape Fear, Ronin, Jackie Brown, Backdraft and Cop Land. Hanks - Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Sleepless in Seattle, A League of Their Own, Forrest Gump, The Green Mile, Apollo 13 and Philadelphia. From a character actor standpoint, Philip Baker Hall also has 9 films in the tournament: The Rock, Boogie Nights, Air Force One, The Truman Show, Rush Hour, Enemy of the State, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Insider, Magnolia.
Some other highlights that I noticed in my research was how on fire actors like Kevin Spacey, Steve Buscemi, Bill Paxton and Gary Oldman were in the 90s. We all know the usual suspects (no pun intended) like Denzel, Hanks, Pacino, Carey, Willis, Jackson, DeNiro, but I was surprised to see those guys right the with them.
Here is the list if you guys would like to take a look. It's also sheet three on the same Google Sheet we used for the nomination process in case you'd like to add to it: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...54&single=true

Oh wow that is incredible! I didn't think it would be doable, that must have taken quite some time. Amongst the ladies it looks like Christina Ricci is on top with five nominations. So many great stats, thank you!
Thanks! It took about 4 days working on it an hour or two each night.
Yes, Ricci was the surprise winner for the ladies. I forgot to mention that in my post. I was surprised to find that Julia Roberts only had 3 films in our tournament. Our group really snubbed some of those romantic comedies that made her a 90s staple. Films like My Best Friend's Wedding, Notting Hill and Runaway Bride. Also, we had a string of courtroom dramas in the tournament, but The Pelican Brief never even got nominated. I know the people in this forum are the only people that find this shit interesting, but what can I say?
I also noticed that the film The Player didn't make it into our tournament. I haven't seen it yet, but that's one of those films that seems to have a big following.

I had a tremendous crush on Christina Ricci in the '90s so this makes sense And yes, Julia Roberts should have had more picks too, agreed. But as you said elsewhere, I thought we did a great job with the noms. There will always be things missing, because there just were so many good and great movies out this decade.

Thanks, MikeDuke and Rube!
It took a few days, but it was a lot of fun to look at all the different actors in these movies over the years. Plus, I'm an IMDB addict anyway.
I will say, the one guy that was probably in more movies than any of these actors is a helicopter pilot. It must be the go-to actor when they have a scene with a helicopter. His profile pic on IMDB is actually a helicopter.

I finally added up the films I've seen that are in the tournament. I've seen 179. I'm hoping to at least get that to 200 by the time the tournament is over.

I've just remembered that Barton Fink was 1991. And I thought 1989.
I am disconsolate.
The only possible shadow of dubious consolation is that if nobody remembered it, probably it didn't have a chance anyway. Which is very very sad too.

Just a heads up that the first four polls closed today and I moved them to the Past Tournaments area under The Great Movie Tournament sub-forum. You'll find them all there eventually.
I had Barton Fink on my list of films to nominate. I came close a few times. I was going back and forth between nominating Miller's Crossing or Barton Fink, I went with Miller's Crossing. You're right, Barton Fink is a pretty obscure Coen Brothers film and probably wouldn't have fared very well in the tournament.
I'm not. Most of the films I watched in the 90's were mainstream films. I know you watched a lot of the lesser known films. In recent years, I've been so focused on watching current films, that I really haven't spent a lot of time watching movies from that decade. I would say that from the films I've seen in the tournament, only a handful are films I've watched recently.

Hi all, unfortunately due to a family emergency I won’t be able to post today’s polls. Might get to them later today, I’m not sure.

Yes, please don't worry about posting them today. I hope all is well!
Only the gentle are ever really strong.
Unfortunately, all is not well but I had some down time and I was able to post today's polls. I'll try to get the last two sets scheduled for this Thursday and Friday too if I can, might do them all in one shot. I might also need someone (Tim? Mike?) to come on board to take up hosting duties, at least temporarily, I would like the event to go on.

I'd like to watch a lot of the films I haven't seen so I can be more informed with the voting, but until the Oscars/awards season is over I don't think that'll be happening.
I'm the same way. There's so much I miss in theaters, plus VOD, plus Netflix, that I'm usually playing catch-up instead of getting to my queue backlog.
A NEW GAME BEGINS
Thank you. I'll post the rest of Round 1 polls today, it's a good distraction anyway and I have some time. I know this is just for fun but it's a nice way to get my mind off things. Don't want to get into specifics but it's my mom and she's having very significant kind of surgery this Friday, happened kind of quickly. I'm obviously very worried but as usual this place helps me relax.
