The film isn't a depiction of abusive teachers in music conservatories, it's about the insane artistic determination to achieve greatness and perfection at any cost, and how the artist feels vindicated of all wrong doings if they achieve it. You think Kubrick cares that he tortured Shelly Duvall? Look at that performance.
