Straight B's. I thought the whole backstory was way too melodramatic and two-dimensional, and could have probably been done in about 100 pages and been much better.

Roland would have understood.

As I've often said, I don't consider the Mejis tale backstory or a flashback or a diversion from the "main story." Mejis is the story. Without this perspective on Roland he'd have been much less fully developed. I felt it was just as important for us to know that story as it was for his tet to know it and I thought the way it was told was perfect.
I'll never understand what's not to like about this book.
B+A+A+.. A lot of side tracking but of course he had to go there so thast the reader could appreciate Roland and where he came from

I hated everything to do with Oz and have re read the story five times at least and still don't understand it. Plus, it was the beginning of the metafiction that I came to despise.
I liked the Mejis back story a great deal and thought the majority of the characters were developed very well.
AAA, favorite of the series by far.
I thought the story was the most concise and clear, and the only one of the series that I felt could exist as a stand-alone story. I consider the ending to be with Susan, and feel that the Oz stuff at the end should have been put in Wolves, as it really just left the reader feeling confused. Overall though, I felt that the series is pretty lame without this book.
All A's. This is my favorite DT book.

I gave it three A's, but I rated the ending of the Mejis story and not the Oz ending, which would get a downright C from me. I was feeling positive, that's all.
This one was sitting on my shelf for years collecting dust. Late last year I started reading it and I couldn't put it down. I loved this book and the background it gave on Roland's formative years. The nice thing for me in that I just started reading it recently was that when I was ready to move on to the next books, they were already written. No waiting time for me. Talk about instant gratification.

I didnt like this book as much as the others. I didnt like
the whole Mejis or Oz bits at all. *shrug*
