I can't believe it - my server is down! I called them yesterday and asked what was the matter; they said they probably wouldn't be repaired till Monday.
I unburied my modem... am now connected at 33.6 Kb/sec, and the damn card is about to expire. Must be the revenge of ka, for me not believing in it.
