Can I please vote for The Stand? I haven't finished reading it but it's miles ahead of To Kill a Mockingbird for me. I always hated that story. Sorry Jean :(
: indignant :
no, of course you can't! what an idea
I really want to read To Kill A Mockingbird. This sounds like the final excuse I need to pick up the book, methinks. :)
gr gr gr!!! why have you been wasting your time?!
Heather :rose: sweetheart, of course you can vote for anything you want! bears were kidding
I greatly preferred The Stand ...
Damn, the Stand is really that good?
I always thought there was strong bias because of the site we're in, but it if it's in the final against a juggernaut like TKAM it must be pretty amazing.
And yes, I am ashamed that I haven't read The Stand yet.
The Stand is a great novel. TKAM is more than a great novel: it's one of those precious cultural phenomena that teach people (and bears) to differ right from wrong, good from evil, truth from lies; and, eventually, to develop their soul - to the extent they will be able to understand the worth of other good things in the world. Such as, say, The Stand.
:couple:
Sorry I dislike To Kill a Mockingbird so much. I read it back in high school and really struggled through it. And I tried to re-read it a few years ago (I swapped books with a friend, gave her Different Seasons and she gave me that to read) well I struggled through it again till I got half way through and said screw it. It's probably just me though, I'm really not a huge fan of the classics.
only 14 people have voted so far
the poll will be up till most of those who took part in the nominations have voted
Interesting that the final 2 are focused around the same concepts of "Good" and "Evil" and how this is perceived by others. I suppose you could say that broadly about most novels that include a protagonist, but in this instance, the label of which is which is very much based on who is making the observation.
The Stand obviously :-)
It was a very hard decision for me, but ultimately, I had to go with The Stand. Though I would be much happier with IT at the top.
we need at least 30 votes here
it's the top of the top we're voting, people and animals and other creatures, please be more active!
I'm surprised you've never read The Stand, 'Nando. It's my favorite King book and it might be my favorite book of all time. A must read for any King fan, that's for sure. You gotta get on that. Do you at least have the book? If not, I can pick up a copy and send it to you. I always see it used for cheap prices.
I like The Stand but I don't think it's King's best. Probably not even in my top 10.
I read The Stand 15 years ago and haven't read To Kill a Mockingbird Yet so I can't vote
What were you, about 13 when you read The Stand? It might be time for a re-read. I'm sure you would enjoy it even more with different perspective and age.
Cyber, I'd love to see the 10 King books you'd put ahead of The Stand. I might discover something I haven't read yet.
I will be honest, I voted for TKAM. I've never read The Stand. I've heard only great things about it though. I loved TKAM, I own a paperback and Kindle version. It was previously my favorite all time book now being replaced by the entire Dark Tower series.
yeah, right... I wanted at least 30 people to vote, just to give anyone a chance to voice their opinion... but since nobody seems to really care, I'll post the list tomorrow, if nothing happens
Another 4 votes wouldn't affect the outcome in any case.
right... right
Ok, here's the deal. I didn't see this thread until this evening. I rarely, rarely venture outside of Calvin's Corner, except for a select few threads I've bookmarked over the years. I hardly ever just browse randomly. I just go to my subscribed threads and click on those. I might go a month or more before it even dawns on me to check other areas of the forum to see what's being discussed.
I do like to participate in polls and discussions about books and movies at times. Some of y'all familiar enough with my presence here on the boards know this. While I realize my participation on these boards is entirely my responsibility, please feel free to send me a PM to alert me of a thread I might be missing through my inattention.
Dave
Dave, you can also always just click on the Unread threads at the top.
I have been trying, for months, to make it an all-site event. I posted the announcements every fucking where. I thought it was a good thing that might interest everybody. I was mistaken.
I just don't care any longer.
And we currently have the ongoing Constant Reader Awards and the Best Horror Movie Tournament, things that more of our membership should take part in. It gives better results and produces some nice debate. It would be nice if instead of 25-30 votes in these polls we would get around 50-60.
yes, silly bears didn't mean the rare, and very treasured, people and animals who do vote and post!!! I know that you've voted and posted before, and I should have specified that my feelings are directed at the other eleven thousand persons who are reported to be members of this site

For me this is an extremely hard one to call.
These two books are so different, two completely different words.... Damn !!
Although both are amazing, I gotta go with Harper Lee's one and only on this one.
I can still truly "feel" this story.
thank you Cook! it's too late now anyway, the list is published... The Stand is at the very top, and much as I love The Stand, I'd rather it were Mockingbird
List is pretty top heavy with King, but what else would anyone expect from this group. That said, I think we have a nice cross section of literature on our list.
