a sad bear... bears love Four Past Midnight...
By the way, speaking of wildcards. The current holders of those six coveted spots are:
Misery
Night Shift
Skeleton Crew
The Eyes of the Dragon
Christine
Firestarter
Very much subject to change, of course, with just half the scores settled. Looking at the overall standings (to be revealed at the end on Round 1), actually FPM sadly does not have a chance to move on. Firestarter currently occupies the sixth and last wildcard spot with a FAS of 4.063291139. Four Past Midnight earned 4.032258065. So, to get into that group of six, a book has to receive more than Firestarter.
All the scores have been added to the polls for Bracket #7. Very strange happenings this time. Every book has lost some points from its 2009 FAS, the worst being Gerald's Game losing -8.93% (-0.294117647). Our winner is Insomnia, and the runner-up is Nightmares & Dreamscapes, which did not advance to Round 2 last year (it finished just outside the Top 30 at #31). So congrats to the fans of N&D!
Bracket #8 results have been added to the polls. The two books moving on, like last year, are The Green Mile and DT4, but what's interesting is that TGM gained about three and a half percent more of its FAS while DT4 lost about three and a half percent of its FAS. Interesting... The biggest loser of this bracket was Bag of Bones, which lost nearly five percent of its FAS and moved from 3rd place in 2009 to 4th this time. Bag of Bones was one of the six wildcard books last year - no such chance this time around.
Another strange tidbit of trivia: #8 is the first bracket this year to have less votes for all five books than in 2009 (by an average of nine less votes each):
Rose Madder - 2009: 79; 2010: 75
The Green Mile - 2009: 93; 2010: 85
Desperation - 2009: 90; 2010: 79
The Regulators - 2009: 89; 2010: 79
Wizard and Glass - 2009: 112; 2010: 98
Bag of Bones - 2009: 88; 2010: 81
The only other bracket this time around that had less votes was Bracket #1, with three books getting less votes than in 2009 (an average of 21 lost votes):
Carrie - 2009: 62; 2010: 46
'Salem's Lot - 2009: 68; 2010: 44
Night Shift - 2009: 60; 2010: 36
The results for Bracket #9 are in. Like last time, the winner and runner-up are Hearts in Atlantis and On Writing. The surprise book is Secret Windows, which went from being 5th last year to 3rd by gaining nearly half a point! The biggest loser would have to be On Writing. Despite keeping its runner-up status, it lost about 5% of its previous score.
Well, this was an interesting bracket. All the results for Bracket #10 are in, and have been added to the polls, and the overview thread. The winner is Black House (which was a runner-up in 2009), and the runner-up is Wolves of the Calla (which also was a runner-up in 2009, in its own bracket). So where's the 2009 bracket winner, you may ask? It was Everything's Eventual and it moved down to 3rd this time. Do not despair, however, if you are a fan of this collection. With its FAS, it earned one of the six wildcard spots (for now, at least), displacing Firestarter in the process, unfortunately.
Bracket #11 polls have closed. I'll update everything a little later today, but the winner and runner-up were DT7 and DT6, respectively. Cell actually came close to getting that runner-up position, but it received just 0.091261452 less than DT6, so it placed 3rd. That would've been interesting, had DT6 missed the 2nd spot, as its FAS was not high enough to get a wildcard spot like it did last year.
That's it! Round 1 has come to a close with the last bracket just closing moments ago. The winner of Bracket #12 was Duma Key, and not far behind the runner-up was Under the Dome. Last year's runner-up Just After Sunset was relegated to 4th place.
We now have our 12 winners and 12 runners-up automatically advancing to Round 2, and the following wildcards:
Misery
Night Shift
Skeleton Crew
Everything's Eventual
The Eyes of the Dragon
Christine
Look for the complete 1-60 table (second post of this thread) to be updated soon.
Round 2 commences on May 3.
OH nooooo The Eyes of the Dragon gets though but not Desperation :nope:
Great job by Night Shift and Christine jumping up 14 and 18 spots respectively to earn wildcard spots.
For the record, here are the books moving into Round 2 that did not do that in 2009 (not including Under the Dome, obviously):
Night Shift
Christine
Nightmares & Dreamscapes
Thus, here the books that made it into Round 2 in 2009 that did not do that this year:
Four Past Midnight
Desperation
Bag of Bones
Just After Sunset
