Why, oh why, oh why-o, did I ever skip the Dallas events!? After UTD, I was on such a lull in my fandom, but 11/22/63 & TWTTK have brought me back big time. What book stores did he get to in DFW? Think it's worth a trip to them to look through their stacks, or are any that were there long gone.

Regarding the bring or not to bring book debate, personally, I'd bring one just in case. It can't hurt. And you don't want to be the person that didn't bring anything if he decides to sign!

KA-CHING! I just bought two VIP tickets as well.

I went to see Lisa Hannigan a few months ago at this theater, it is a small venue which makes this event all the more exciting.

Gotta love an intimate setting for a show like this. Deanna and I saw them at Webster Hall NYC in June 2007 another fairly small venue and that was a great time.
You can not help getting into how much fun this crew of writers/performers have on stage.
The El Rey appears to be good place for this group to let thier hair down..... and what could be better than another gathering of TDT.orgers.

I'm certain those chairs and tables will be gone. It will be standing room only, so a lot more people will fit.

It's a rare occasion that SK makes the trip west. Really looking forward to meeting the California TDT.org members - and special kudos to you other guys making the long haul out here!

I don't know if they will have the dance floor set up, but I bet it looks a lot more like this in preparation for the concert (note, this is a view from the stage):

The theatre looks great, but it can't seeat many people from the looks of things.

I know people who have been to this venue and they're saying the seats you see in the picture will probably be removed. The shows they've gone to here have all been standing room only.

Those that are going wear comfortable shoes!

But some of you will be happy to know that there is a full stocked bar on the left side of the theater not shown in the picture...

Randall Flagg
05-28-2012, 09:14 AM
El Rey Theatre is currently a live music venue in the Miracle Mile (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_Mile,_Los_Angeles,_California) area of the Mid-Wilshire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-Wilshire) region in Los Angeles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles,_California), California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California). "El Rey" means "The King" in Spanish. This art deco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_deco) building was designed by Clifford A. Balch (who designed over twenty classic art deco movie theatres around Southern California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_California)). Much of the theatre, including the lobby, still retains its art deco roots, admired for its Zigzag and Streamline Moderne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_Deco#Streamline_Moderne) design.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Rey_Theatre#cite_note-Roderick137-0)
El Rey was originally built in 1936[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Rey_Theatre#cite_note-Roderick137-0) as a single-screen movie theatre and functioned as a cinema for nearly 50 years. From the 1980s to the early 1990s El Rey Theatre was a dance-music club called Wall Street, but since 1994 this theatre has been a live music venue which is now exclusively booked through Goldenvoice. The capacity is approximately 700 and it also has a VIP balcony in the back.

Can I assume then that this club is in a safe enough neighborhood to be comfortable with most Hotels in the area.
Of course will check reviews etc., was just trying to get an overview if any had thoughts.

The other question; Would anyone know if there is viable mass transit to that area?
When we travel to NYC, Wash DC, Miami or many cities we often find we can use trains, bus etc rather than car rental or cab.
We may want to rent a car anyway to EXPLORE a bit. Just curious..... perhaps a trip to AAA tommorrow is in order.

Since my job brought me here two years ago, I've found that LA traffic is the worst in the country for a reason - very spread out and you drive a long ways to get anywhere (with plenty of company on the road). Very limited trains with an emphasis on buses for mass transit:

http://www.metro.net/riding_metro/maps/images/System_Map.pdf

I'd rent a car if you want to do anything other than stay close to the venue and your hotel and if you can bring a friend, carpool lanes are a definite plus.

There is no public transit from LAX to the hotel (a hotel within 2 miles). It's L.A. everything is by car, limo, and taxi-in that order. If you have tickets to the event, don't worry, you have a month to figure it out.

The venue is in the Mid Wilshire District - I consider it a typical "downtown" scenario with the usual low-lifes hanging around while the more respectable are out club hopping or seeing shows. There are no lack of hotels in the area but I think if you are going to do any sort of sightseeing you should most definitely rent a car. Any other transport will take you three times longer (if not more) to get to your destination. If you have the time there are some wonderful places to visit all within close vicinity - Le Brea Tar Pits and the Getty Museum, Santa Monica pier and beach area to name a very few. 30 miles south to Long Beach (40 -60 min car ride) and you have The Queen Mary, Pacific Aquarium - even a ferry to take you to Catalina Island if its in your budget and time frame.

Not to mention many public transportation ends at a certain time like 8 or 9 pm for some. So you do not want to be left stranded in the wrong neighbourhood with no reliable transportation.

Really Really wish I could fly to the Left Coast and attend this event (see the final performacne of the RBR) and meet some tdt.org(ers), but it's not in the cards!

I guess this photo will have to do for now. I've seen the Remainders a few times and always had the best of fun! For the DC Nation performance I had VIP tickets which entitled you to a 45 min reception with the band members and all the drinks you could want during the performance. The venue had an upstairs bar that overlooked the stage and you had to have the VIP wristband to gain access. In the pic below are three matted and framed RBRB posters; the one on the left for Bangor - I did not get to this performance, but Stu Tinker gave me the poster when I was in his store (Betts in Bangor) talking to him about one of the performances I did see. The poster in the middle is signed by all the band members and is the DC Nation performance. The one on the right was a poster i took off the wall at the performance a few years earlier at The Bayou in Georgetown (Washington, DC).

The second pic (sorry for the poor quality) is me and Sai King at the DC Nation reception. See how King is dressed! Very casual - he was still in major recovery from his "accident!"

This is for you all going to the Los Angeles concert for the Rockbottom Remainders. You know, all of you (us) that already paid $200 (plus another $20+ in extra charges) for the meet and greet.

They are now offering a $295 ticket just like ours, except it includes a lithograph that is signed by all the authors. It sounds like original sigs on a lithograph, not a lithograph of sigs.

I would upgrade for the extra $95 if the sigs are originals, but I have no idea how now that Ticketmaster took all my dough. Anyone heard anything, or want to look into it?

For anyone not going, they have added:

- an option to buy said signed lithograph for $150 without an event ticket, and/or

- an option to buy a set of signed books (one per author) for $300 without an event ticket. They don't say which books nor what edition, and you don't have a selection.

These signed items in all these options are mailed out in the week after the concert.

Yes, they probably will. In fact we could buy it right now, but I want to pay the $95 extra, not the $150 price tag.

I'm not at all confident that they will be organized enough that night to sell the signed litho for $95 to some of us and $150 to others. I look forward to hearing what you find out. Thanks.

Hey, I live up in Seattle, Washington and was thinking about coming to this show b/c I'm a big fan of some of the writers involved.

I have an old Retail VCR tape and it's case of the band that they put out ...and a book I'd like Mr. King to sign if possible...

I know you can't guarantee it, but I don't want to bring them (due to risk of damage) if you think there is ZERO chance of them signing. I don't mind bringing them if there is even a chance since that would be super cool to have them signed. I saw a signed book package but I'm guessing there are restrictions and that YOU are providing the books so we cannot have our own books signed? Or if we could bring our own book and have it signed and forgo the signed book that was part of the package that would be cool. Confused, I am (in my bad Yoda impression).

Figured I'd ask since you appear to be the event guru! :)

Just a big thing for me since I have to pay for airfare and the tickets and then my girlfriend is of course going to want to go and then that will mean that I will probably have to pay for everything for her as she isn't into the writers as much as me and then there is the shops/stores in L.A. and how am I going to keep her away from those....? sigh....

At any rate, it looks to be a great show and any insight you can give me would be much appreciated.

While we'd love for you to come down and support the causes associated with the gig, I'd have to advise you against any expectation that anything would get signed at the event. We have a signed lithograph by the whole band, and a book package with a signed book by all in the band available for sale...

Common sense would tell you that 150 VIP individuals can not expect King to sign a "couple" of books each. The VIP reception is 1 hour and King is not going to sit at a table for 60 minutes signing 300 books-then after a 30 minute break come out and play guitar (with a 300 signature cramped hand). That's why they are offering the presigned books, and lithograph.

Yeah.....but those 150 people are not all there to see King (as crazy as that sounds).

I think buying a M&G ticket for the sole purpose of getting a book signed would be a mistake. Its a concert with an opportunity to meet the band members before their final public appearance as The Rock Bottom Remainders. Its not an book signing event. Just my humble opinion that those attending with an expectancy of leaving with a signed book or two may be disappointed.

150...didnt know that there was so many.
The venue has a ~700 person capacity for SRO type concerts. The VIP tickets and perks seem to be "evolving"-but never becoming being less expensive.
I don't know 150 to be an official number, but even if the VIP tickets were limited to 50 people, King isn't going to sit at a table and sign 100 books. That's why there are now going to be pre-signed books and lithographs.
I see (and just my forecast, not anything official), this VIP "hour" as King and the other authors/band members come into a room-the concert SRO room, for a photo op, meet and greet, very similar to King's appearance at the Mason event. During that brief time neither he nor the other authors will sign anything-zero zip nada. If I am wrong and King signs 450 books, then wow! If I am right and King signs zero (or one or two weird things prior to, or post event) then there are going to be quite a few people lugging around a backpack/suitcase/large box with several King books in them. Said books will travel a long way, only to be unsigned.

It looks like there is two different versions. The wording is confusing to me. What is the difference? Also, if you order the book option, is it one book signed by all or one book by each author?

Speaking from experience, I TOO AGREE strongly with Jerome and Patrick.... Do not count on or even plan to be able to place a pen and book in SK's hands. he will be very cordial about visiting and even pictures however, he sets times a places he is ready, willing and able to sign. If you should have the good fortune to casually bump into him someplace in LA after the performance you are more likely to cop a signature than at the event. I would assume some other authors might be less restrictive unless they decide together beforehand the lithograph and peordered books are all they do (a likely possibility).

Not true....you have to pay to see the show.

And the conference is closed to the public.

Actually after phone calls and emails etc I did find out that you can register as a non member and choose either the 25 option or the 35 option. Apparently as long as you are registered and pick up your name tag you can see the RBR event - which costs another 25. So total is either 60 or 50 for the June 23 show depending on your registration option. You have to register as a non member on the ALA site. Just a word of caution: I talked (via phone calls and emails) with about 4 different people from ALA and each one said something different. But eventually I did find the non member registration option. Hopefully I wont be turned away at the door of the event but I live close enough where its not that big of a deal if I do.

Well I may be being way too optimistic but I am hoping that:

a) Because there are no more book packages available the band members (including King) WILL do a little signing ( if not too many people are at the meet and greet). Seems if they cannot direct us to pre-signed books to buy maybe they will sign a little bit 'cause we did spend 200 for the ticket,
And
b) Obviously there are more Lithos available so I am hoping they have them for sale at the event at a REDUCED price seeing as some were able to buy it for 90 and those of us who purchased our tickets before the litho was available are being asked to pay 150...

Either way, signatures or no signatures I think it will be a very fun event.

I just noticed that the El Rey Theater photo policy is "Photo Policy:
We allow small point & shoot cameras and digital cameras. We do not allow video cameras or professional cameras (with removable lenses)."
Ouch. I brought my (larger than a point and shoot) digital camera-the kind that has a removable lens.
I am also wondering if they will allow back packs. I (like many others I am sure) planned on bringing a couple of books-although the odds of them being signed are slim. Oh well, I'll know in 3 hours.

Ok so here is my review of the night:

Got there over an hour before the show. Sat out in front for a few minutes, then decided to go across the street for a bite to eat. Of course, just as soon as I do, King rolls up and I miss him. As I rush back across the street, I notice the guy in the crosswalk with me is Matt Groening. A small group of autograph hunters surround him and he accommodates all of them.

While I wait for he meet and greet to start, I meet Patrick , Jerome, Bill, and a several other very nice people. They let us in ten minutes late, and i'm the first one through the door. I start looking for King...and stake out a door where I think he will come out. He does! but heads toward the bathroom. I decide to grab my friend who has a book to get signed, and when I turn my back, King comes out of the bathroom, signs a book for Jerome and Patrick, and then ignores me!

He then crosses the room, and hides somewhere back stage for about 20 minutes. Fox 11 News is there and goes backstage and interviews him during this time. Then he comes out...signs books for 15-20 minutes, and then hides again until the show starts. I was able to get a book signed, as was my guest...so I got two total.

After that, I had Matt Groening sign my ticket...he drew a little Bart Simpson on it.

I bought a shirt for $20

The show went for about 1.5 hours, and was really good. I could have done without Amy Tan's rendition of "These Boots Were Made For Walking". Roger McQuinn of the Byrds was great!

After the show, about a dozen of us waited out front for King...but then heard he was leaving via the back door...so we rushed around the corner. He would not sign a thing unfortunately and ignored us (I can't say I blame him...several of the people were very rude).

All in all, I had a great time. Got two King books signed...met some great people...had a few beers...got a Matt Groenng autograph...and saw a good show.

My only complaint, is that King was out for less than half of the one hour meet and greet. There was less than 150 people in the M&G..he could have stayed out the whole time and accommodated them all. Further more, the fact he did an interview during the M&G was bad form. That was OUR time...we paid a premium to see the band...that time belonged to us as far as I was concerned.

Oh my GOD that was fun!!

My first comment is that it was much less a Meet and Greet then it was the most disorganized book signing I have ever attended. There was no chatting or rubbing shoulders with either King or Groening. They were signing like mad dogs and in Kings case he had the most obnoxiously irritating "body guard" lady directing everyone, taking the books to hand to King, and making sure each person got only one signature (though I managed to get two by hiding behind someone else and shooting my arm - with book - through the mass of bodies so she couldnt see me).

Merlyn, RF, Explorer, Tippy4, Scg1999, Patrick and spouses: You guys are awesome and so fun! I missed you all after the show started and wanted to hang around afterwards to see you guys again but unfortunately I miscalculated my Cadillac Margarita intake (as did my friend who came with) and our designated driver dragged us out during Mustang Sally.

I THINK I recorded most of the show on my camera. Not sure cause I was a little tipsy. The battery is charging and when I can pull off pics and video Ill post some.

Last comment - I loved how the band members just got up there and had a great time. No the voices werent very good - and it was weird seeing little Asian Amy Tan do These Boots were Made for Walking in her slutty outfit - but you could see they were having a blast and performing for the fun of it and for no other reason. I really admire them for that.

Groening was actually chatting a bit..but the line to see him was long and he had to keep it brief so everyone had a chance. He signed my ticket and shook my hand. Pretty much everyone who wanted his autograph got one.

King on the other hand...it was hand over your book, get it signed and move on. I actually asked a woman in front of me to step aside since she was not having anything signed..as I knew at any moment he would just leave. He needed his handler to be firm with people....I did not think she was obnoxious at all. She needed to act like a "traffic cop" to keep things moving.

Over twelve hours later...and not a single book signed at the event is on ebay yet....I assume by the end of the night there will be a couple.....

We were the first in line for Groening and he seemed a bit overwhelmed when he saw how many people were waiting to see him. So he didnt chat with us really but was very accommodating with his signings.

Re obnoxious lady - She said a few things to me and my friend that were pretty rude actually (something about having to protect Steven from woman like us when my friend asked Steve to date her book) and when taking our books for signature she changed the open page to one of her choosing. My WTTKH and another book were both opened to the title page but she changed it to the first blank page. I just found her a bit irritating.

I am totally jealous of these signings when you can bring a book...I'd def. pay a couple hundred for the priviliege...especially to get my Night Shift signed like above...

But, sometimes reading about the cattle call aspect of these signings makes me feel less eager....the "stand in line" signings at least have the expectation of zero interaction at the trade of not having to battle a crowd...haha...

Over twelve hours later...and not a single book signed at the event is on ebay yet....I assume by the end of the night there will be a couple.....

I saw one this morning on ABE. A signed US trade of TWTTK for $395. Seller said it was signed with a black sharpie and was obtained at the concert.

I hear ya!! The way the staff conducted it, it was as if Mick Jagger showed up to sign autographs. It was complete mayhem for 20 minutes!!!

Edit: It was a little strange in that he seemed to make a real point of underlining the sig. He only signed one more book after mine and I helped the lady behind me get from his side away fron the handler!!!

I want to thank members of this forum for going to bat for me at the concert. As a result I will receive two books that I have wanted signed for a very long time.

I will soon receive a signed UK 1st edition of Night Shift....finally completing my "mini collection" of a signed 1st trade copy of each of King's 1st 5 novels BOTH US and UK.

Second book is a UK 1st trade Song of Susannah which makes my Dark Tower set signature complere. I now have a signed copy of each Dark Tower hardcover version/printing BOTH US and UK.

Thanks. I will post pictures maybe in a week or so of the signed US/UK 1st editions of King's 1st 5 novels. The UK versions as you all know were much smaller print runs than even the US versions (which were quite small).

I am curious as to who out there owns a signed UK 1st edition of Carrie, Salem's Lot, Shining, Night Shift or The Stand? Can't be too many of them

My God, that was the best evening out I've had in a very long time! Always good to see my buddy, Jerome, and so wonderful to meet so many other TDT members for the first time!

I brought a couple King books at the last second. Didn't give it much thought because I really didn't think he'd be signing anything at all. So I glad I did! Rick, thanks again for the pen! SK used it to sign my and Jerome's books outside the men's room (I was headed out when SK was heading in) - prior to the mob signing he did with the black sharpie (I got one of those sigs too).

We had many of the other authors sign our tickets (I just folded the eticket print out) since we brought no other books. Matt Groening and Ridley Pearson were especially good people - very humble and gracious. I didn't talk Simpsons at all with Groening, we discussed his earlier project, Life In Hell. While he was doodling Simpsons' characters for most everyone, I asked him to draw Akbar and Jeff for me.

Again, we had a wonderful time. I especially loved meeting you guys who came out for the event.

Ha ha! Agreed.

I was walking out of the men's room and some guy walked past me going in, mumbling something to himself. It took a second to register that it was Stephen King that just passed me.

Immediately Jerome walked up, we talked, and King walked out.

Jerome said, "Mr. King, are you signing tonight?" King said, "No, but I'll sign yours."

Jerome had no pen. Luckily I had a specially chosen pen that Rick had given me outside while waiting in line. King used it to sign Jerome's book, then mine.

While signing mine, King said, "I gotta get out of here." I said, "Yes, before you get mobbed."

We expressed our appreciation and then he was gone.

No. I got no perks, as I got no pass. I didn't tell you, but when the person granted the pass, I followed up with an email asking about if I would have a chance to ask King a few questions, and was the press getting in earlier than the VIP-which I had a ticket to. As soon as he heard I had a VIP ticket, he withdrew the PP. I asked him why, and he responded
You already have a ticket to the event and reception, so the Press Pass doesn't add any more to what you already have...So not to worry...See you Friday... - TedI didn't see any point in debating him as he had final say.

Wow Congratulations! Apparently that was a pretty big event. Details of how you cornered King and Groening?

It WAS a big event. I would say 2-3 times the size of the El Rey event.

Groening was easy....he came out of the rehearsal and on his way to the Green Room we asked him for some signatures. He said he would be back in a while and he lived up to his word. When he came back, he said "look, I will sign stuff for you now, but please, don't hang around after the show, because I will not be signing, and it makes me feel bad if I know you are hanging around out here".

Click the link on my post above and watch the Coke commercial...that is almost EXACTLY how I got King's signature (except I did not offer him a Coke, or kiss his ass as much as the kid....almost though). I snuck into the service corridor between the stage and Green Room right before the show ended and hung back out of sight. When he shuffled by (he moves very slowly), I asked for an autograph, and he said "no" at first...but three seconds later he turned around and said "walk with me" so I caught up to him and when he got to where someone was waiting for him with a soda, he took my book and signed it. I told him how much I enjoyed the book, and that it was great to come back to the story of The Dark Tower. He said something like "well, good," and handed back my book. I thanked him, and left. Four other guys who I had seen hanging around (autograph hunters) before and during the show, had been following behind him about 50 feet from a different direction. As I passed them, the woman who had the soda for King started shouting at them telling them they were not allowed in this area, and they were thrown out.

I had been talking to one of the "hunters" before, and during the show. Apparently they all know each other and some like each other and some do not. It reminded me of the TV show "Storage Wars". He told me after the El Rey show, several of them followed King to his hotel...but got nothing signed. They showed up the next day at his hotel, and were able to get two signatures each before Ted the manager came out and screamed at them.

TwistedNadine
06-24-2012, 10:06 AM
My guess is that the news people had a press pass and those guys were able to take up 20 minutes (or more) of King's time away from the M&G. I think it was you (or maybe merlin) who told me King took so long to come out because he was being interviewed. Merlin and I talked about this. We paid a premium for one full hour of the band members' time yet not only were the doors opened late (about 15 to 20 minutes late I think) but the actual time spent with the "biggies" was cut short too. King in particular showed up for a total of about 15 mins and from what I heard there were people still left standing with no signature from him - let alone a "Meet and Greet"

Regardless of my complains of the lack of organization and broken promises I had a fantastic time. Honestly, if you guys (the TDT members) had not been there to "Meet and Greet" with I dont think I would have enjoyed myself as much. So thanks guys.

I agree!!! Nice to meet you and the others as well!!!

Great story, Rick. Loved hearing it in "real time" last night via text and phone call! Congrats on the extra signed TWTTKH!

So you have two signed TWTTKH, right? One in sharpie from Friday night's mob signing, and this one from Saturday night? Nice!

(Jim, I edited your post above so all three of your pics show. Great stuff!)

I think that is the first Sharpie Pen sig I've seen that I actually really like (on the WTTKH trade). I really like where its positioned with the Birds and title.

I haven't had a real chance to give my thoughts and experiences until now, so here goes.
Friday morning I leave my house at 5 AM and drive to L.A. and meet Merlin1958. We drive over to the event site to get a feel for the traffic, parking, and to reconnoiter the El Rey theater. We walk around the back, and the exit area is fenced off and does a long "L" shaped run, before it opens to the street-right behind a wall. We figure that King will likely enter there, rather than the front. While having lunch just across the street, we run into EXPLORER and his wife. Bill and I head back to the hotel for a while to rest.
At ~4:45 PM, Bill and I are ready to return to the theater, only to discover my car has a flat. And I mean flat-1PSI pressure in the tire! Bill runs to a gas station and grabs a can of the flat tire foam. Once we put the foam in, we drive to the station and finish filling the tire. Total delay was about 20 minutes.
As we are driving to the theater, Bill, gets a call from EXPLORER-King just arrived-at the back area we had figured, and King signed several dozen items for people. Then King actually couldn't get in the exit, and had to walk up front to the the main entrance where King signed for more people.
Bill and I arrive-15 minutes after King walked in. Ouch!
As I wait for AAA to come change the tire-the fix-it can didn't work-and I didn't want to deal with calling AAA at midnight, I told Bill to go ahead and get in line, and I'll be in when the tire is changed. The Auto club actually arrives and changes the tire in only 20 minutes-pretty amazing in downtown L.A. at 6:15 PM.
I go to find Bill and see tippy4 and Patrick in line (damn near at the front). I sidle up next to Patrick and tippy4 and we talk for the 15 minutes before they let people in.
It should be noted that the people at the El Rey were clueless. One person says no backpacks, no books etc. another says ask the 4 ladies who are sitting at the will call desk. The ladies at will call have no idea-and the one guy at the door who seems to be in charge can't be asked a question as security won't let anyone approach the door before opening.
They finally let people in, and I walk in with Patrick and tippy4-Bill is about 50 people back. Security doesn't even look in-or at our bags, they could care less.
Once inside tippy4 makes an educated guess that King will appear in a certain area of the room-right by the restrooms. There are only about 50 people in the place when tippy4 spots King heading to the restroom. I immediately head to the "head", while tippy4 went to grab his guest and bring her to meet King. I don't have a pen, as I had given mine to Bill, along with a book-in case he saw King first :).
Patrick and I stand outside the door, not wanting to ask King to sign a book while he was at a urinal or in the stall-we are aggressive-but not that aggressive. Patrick loans me tippy's pen, while Patrick unwraps the book he wants signed.
Patrick already told the story, but King signs only two books; mine and Patrick's then King makes a beeline to the backstage area, refusing to sign anything else.
Here you can insert tippy's, Melin's and TwistedNadine's account of how it was a zoo when King came out for 15 minutes. People were really pushing and shoving. It would have been wiser to have King in an area where a "fair" queue could have been set up, and likely King would have been able to sign one item each for all 150 VIP ticket holders in ~25 minutes. BTAIM, I was able to get another book signed, although now King was only signing with a sharpie. It's not the "nicest" signature, but it is real and that is what counts.

I really enjoyed the show, and I've posted a pic or two and a video. I'll probably upload one or two more videos. As one can see from the video, King and the others are writers first, and musicians second, but all in all, they play music better than most professional musicians write books.
It was a really fun and funny show. Some of the songs made fun of other writers -Patterson comes to mind, some made fun of "split infinitives", another line they made fun of was "just between you and I". One of the lady writers/singers sang a really funny diddly about meeting some gorgeous 20 something hunk in a Texas bar-and being blown off by him. It was hilarious.
Perhaps its just me, but King looked and seemed a bit physically hampered. He was a bit weirdly hunched quite a lot of the time.
Still, it was a blast. It was improved by meeting old and new friends from the board.
I ended up getting two of the three books I brought signed, so it was a success.
After the show several of us proceeded to a local watering hole and carried on the fun for another hour, or so. That's where the pic of me with my arms splayed out was taken.
Got back to the room, and couldn't sleep, wound up falling asleep at 3 AM, then woke up at 5 AM, and couldn't get back to sleep.
I drove to a tire shop that opened at 8 AM, had them fix the hole in the tire, then drove 6 hours to get home. Last night I slept 11 hours and woke up today feeling great, and wanting to do it all over again!

RF thats the first Im hearing of the flat tire drama. Merlin told me he was standing right behind me in line (though we didnt know it 'cause we hadnt met yet) and after I hung up the phone with him I wondered why you werent with Merlin. So now I know. Also, based on your time-line it sounds like my party and I missed King walking into the front entrance by maybe seconds. We arrived around 515.

Yes, and what about the $300 signed book package? Anyone know anything about what was in that? I almost bit on that one but, for some reason, did not.

Actually, we cut in line with Rick and his companion first. Jerome slipped in later. :)

The lithographs and book packages are to be mailed out this week after the concerts. That was part of the original terms of sale. Great way to handle it, so we weren't all hauling around even more stuff all night.

Lithos will be mailed. None offered for sale at either show.

There was an unsigned poster offered at the ALA show for $10. I got mine for $5 since I was the last to buy.

The book in the $300 package is 11/22/63. Those too will be mailed.

I felt bad, but this is a cutthroat business. :) I actually called/waived to him to come join us at the front, but he didn't think that the "tallest guy there", could sneak in.
It all was fine since Bill brought one book, and it got signed. I brought three and two were signed, but had I not been in at the front, I would have missed out on the ink pen signed "Gunslinger".
Bill still loves me.

Is 11/22/63 the most readily available book for signature? I think I have 2 S/L and 2 signed copies and 1 fake signature and 8 unsigned copies!!! You had to buy a copy to get a book signed in Savannah. I have way to many copies of that book (even though i loved it!)

I also had to buy a bunch in Sav to get my other books signed. I have four unsigned copies left (gave away a lot of them already). Someone (maybe it was you Roseannebarr?) posted an email saying the books being signed as part of the package were donated books. Not sure why 11/22/63 is the one being donated and not WTTKH. Maybe has to do with print runs - more copies of 11/22/63 to dispose of than WTTKH?

Patrick

I'm guessing it is 11/22/63 rather than TWTTKH because 11/22/63 is a standalone book rather than a book to be inserted into the middle of a series.

I did not order the $300 signed book package, so I'll be very interested to see which printing of 11/22/63 is included. For those who ordered the package: Please let us know when you get them! Thanks.

You are giving them too much credit....trust me, they did not put that much thought into it.

It's going to be 11/22/63, which makes perfect sense if the publisher still has copies of a hardcover that has gone to paperback already.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLEeEpO8lu4

King originally wanted to use his grandfathers name-Guy Fildridge? as his pen name, but had to change it. He only had a few minutes to decide, and had a novel at hand by Richard Stark, and was listening to music by Bachman turner Overdrive. He merged the two for Richard Bachman.

If I were asked to evaluate that signature I would scarcely give it a second glance and say 100% fake. Now, it gives me reason to really think when I judge a King signature...I mean there are some classically laughable fake sigs out there but you know there are some where I think the "g" or the "S" look wrong...well there is A LOT that looks wrong with this (these) sharpie sigs but I know it to be legit.
